These are two mood boards which display the interests of my readers it displays what interests my readers are interested in, in their everyday lives as well as their musical interests. It shows they are interested in films, clothing make up and technology. The audience of my magazine is predominantly female and mainly students in either college or university. They also have regular visits to the cinema and go to festivals and concerts regularly. They purchase music regularly and enjoy a variety of films.

How will I make my magazine effective?

To make my magazine effective I will:
  • Ensure page numbers are used appropriately
  • Use multimedia platforms (e.g. a website)
  • Use 'Buzz words' on my contents page
  • Ensure my cover is not too cluttered but no dead space is visible
  • Ensure my cover has a clear layout
  • Make the contents page attractive and have at least three pictures visible on the page
  • Use size 11-12 font through out my magazine to make it aesthetically pleasing
  • Have a message from the editor on my contents page
  • Have section headings for my stories in my magazine
  • Make my article has brief paragraphs and is to the point
  • Have control over the mis-en-scene of my photographs so they fit in with the theme of my magazine
I feel all of these points are important to make an effective music magazine. Especially the mis-en-scene of my photographs. I have decided these points after looking at past pupils work and magazines currently on the market.

What have I learnt?

After analysing music magazines which are currently on the market and past pupils pages I have gathered some ideas of what to include in my music magazine and what makes each page successful.

Front Cover
  • Needs to have a clear layout
  • Needs to have a variety of information on articles
  • Main image should take up majority of page to attract readers attention
  • Cover should not be too cluttered but have minimal dead space
  • Masthead needs to be attractive and relate to theme of magazine
Double page spread
  • Needs to have an attractive image to draw reader in
  • Page should be set up clearly and again not cluttered
  • Text should be broken down into small paragraphs
  • Multiplatform links should m noticeable (e.g. website)
  • Title of article needs to be clear and relate to the story
Contents page
  • A few images look more interesting than one
  • Not too many stories on the page
  • Needs to look attractive
  • Could make a list of events in local areas
  • Appeal to readers lifestyle, not just interest in music
I now have a clearer idea of what makes a good music magazine, and what I can include in mine to make it more appealing. I have found this activity useful to help me develop ideas on my music magazine.

School Magazine-Front Cover Evaluation

Futher Evaluation

Three strenghts of my Front cover:
* My Main Image
* My Masthead
* My Pug

Three targets of improvement for my Front Cover:
* My Subsidiary Images
* Too much dead space
* Use of sell lines (could have used more)

After discussing my magazine cover with my teacher I came up with the suggested improvements shown above. I will use these improvements when I am completing my music magazine cover to ensure my mark is raised. I am happy with the improvements I have made with my teacher as I feel they are apropriate and will give me a higher mark for my music magazine cover.

Evaluation of my School Magazine

School Magazine Evaluation

How have you used media conventions in your preliminary task?
In terms of Media Conventions I have used a variety of conventions which are used on ordinary magazines. I used a main image of a student looking directly at the camera which would help draw the audience in. I also used a Splash to match my main image to create a story. I used a pug on my front cover so that it looked professional and finally I used a fotter and subsidiary images along with a masthead. However in terms of my music magazine in order to make it look effective I will add a header bar, a logo and maybe a bar code.

How have you used media language in your product?
I created my school magazine in order to fit in with a school enviroment. I used the yellow and green colours of my font as the yellow is the colours of the school and I felt the graan complimented it well. The main image I used is supposed to be a friendly image in order to draw the audience in. I chose the layout as I felt it was a methodical and easy to understand. I feel my magazine met the task well and would easily fit into a school environment.

How did you address your audience?
I fell my magazine would appeal to my chosen target audience of all school years as well as both genders. I fell I covered a variety of aspects of school life which would appeal to many pupils. I covered sport, drama and work. I feel I gave useful and informative stories which would fit in well with the environment. I feel the colour scheme would appeal to everyone as it is not gender specific and I feel my main image is a friendly image for the audience to see.

What skills have you developed during the preliminary task?
I have developed my research as I looked at a variety if past examples before creating my magazine. I also feel I have developed my planning skills as I feel I effectively planned my magazine before I made it, my plan was easy to follow and was a great help when creating my final draft. I feel these skills will be a great help for the creation of my music magazine.

Overall I am very pleased with my finishe school magazine an I am pleased with the way I handled the task an I feel my new skills will be helpful to create my music magazine.

Further development

This is the further development of my School Magazine. I have now finished my pug and added colour to the font. I then begn work on my main image . Using Photoshop I removed th backgroud of the image as I didnt like the background of the original image. I the placed it on my magazine and the image did not go well with the colour of the font i originally had for my footer. For this reason I decicded to change the font colour to yellow and then added a black outline so it would not look washed out. I am very pleased with th development so far.

Developing my School Magazine

This is the basic outline of my School Magazine 'School Chat.' I developed my masthead based on my original design. I am very pleased with how it has turned out. I then developed my footer again based on my design, which I think looks effective and matched the masthead well. I moved on and started to develop my pug. I have completed the first part of my pug and will complete it by finishing off my design for the word 'healthy' and will develop it further to try and get it as close to my original design as possible. I am very pleased with the progress of my magazine so far, I am looking forward to developing it further, adding a main image, creating a splash and also creating smaller stories to go along with my main image.

School Magazine first drafts

This is the first design I came up with. It is the first of two designs that is created. I like this design as I think it is a clear and methodical layout to follow and I am pleased with it. There are a few aspects I would change but on the whole I am happy with it.

This is the Masthead that I designed for my first magazine. I chose to name the magazine 'School Chat' as i thought it would appeal to pupils as it makes the viewer think of gossip, which would appeal to teenagers I think. I chose Yellow with the black outline as it is the colours of the school and I thought the green complemented it very well

  This is the pug that I designed for this magazine. I thought mentioning healthy eating would appeal to some students as well as promote the school canteen. I decided to create the 'l' into a carrot as i thought it looked effective and complimented the subject of the pug

I decided to make the main story of this magazine about the drama team as I thought it would appeal to a variety of people as well as show off the schools extra curricula. I would like the main image to be of a group of people from the drama department. This is because it clearly matches the main heading and it also gives people the opportunity to visualise what the drama team actually look like. I think this story would appeal to many pupils through out the school.
I  made my smaller stories about topics that I felt would be useful to many members of the school. I chose revision and the head boy and head girl. I thought these stories would appeal to many people as all years struggle with revision and find it boring. I thought the head boy and head girl would be appealing to people as they may want to know the views of the head boy and girl and see if they agree

This is my second design for my school magazine. I liked this design as I thought it was a clear layout and looked attractive. I thought the design would appeal to many students
This is the masthead of my second design. I decided to call it 'School life' as I felt it was appropriate and went well with the theme of a school magazine. However I prefer the masthead of my previous design 'School Chat' as I feel it would appeal to more people than 'School life.'
For the main image of this magazine I decided to use a photo of a 6th form student in the 6th form resource area. I thought that this image would appeal to many 6th formers and help bring more students to the resourse area. It is also helpful to many students as it gives them some information about the resources avalible to them as a 6th former

This is the pug that I designed for this magazine. I designed it as I thought music would appeal to many teenagers at the school and I made it more appealing by trying to transform the 's' an 'i' in music look like musical notes
This is the design i created as the footer for my final magazine. I want the design to be the same for each of the covers I created. I created my footer based on other magazines currently on the market
 I created my smaller stories on topics that I felt would be helpful to students. One was of a UCAS for giving tips on how to fill one out for pupils who need to complete one. The other was of the leisure centre to show the surroundings of the school and what acilities are avalible to pupils.
